The Church of the Souls in Purgatory outside the Gate is an interesting example of 18th-century religious architecture linked to the devotion to the souls in purgatory. Among its most distinctive features is a permanent mechanical nativity scene, open to visitors all year round, entitled “The Nativity of Rio Castello”. The installation, curated by a group of volunteers, offers an evocative reconstruction of Rio as it was in centuries past, highlighting village life and its historic link with mining.
