Located in the historic center of Rio nell’Elba, just below the panoramic Barcocaio terrace, the museum can be easily reached by walking down from Piazza del Popolo.
The exhibition presents the history of eastern Elba from the 3rd millennium BC to the Middle Ages, highlighting the ancient connection between local communities and mining activities.
Artifacts are displayed in one large room, including:
Copper Age funerary goods from the Grotta di San Giuseppe
(about 90 burials with pottery, arrowheads, bone and bronze objects)
Finds from the Bronze Age and Early Iron Age
Etruscan and Hellenistic grave goods from the Buraccio necropolis
Remains of mining facilities from San Bennato (near Cavo)
Roman stucco decorations from the Villa of Capo Castello
Since 2008, the museum also hosts the Gente di Rio Mineral Collection, donated by the last miners to preserve the memory of their hard work and the island’s mining past.
