Festa del Padreterno (Feast of the Eternal Father)

The Festa del Padreterno (Feast of the Eternal Father) is a historic and evocative religious and folk festival in Rio nell’Elba, tied to the veneration of the Most Holy Trinity and the homonymous church (commonly referred to as del Padreterno) located just outside the town center.

History and Origins
In the past, the celebrations of the Padreterno represented one of the most vibrant traditions of the Rio area, drawing visitors and worshippers from every corner of Elba Island. The day was a true village celebration, brought to life by a historical market through the narrow streets, traditional games in the main square, and cultural events.

A particularly significant chapter of the festival is linked to the solemn procession of May 1915: on the occasion of Italy’s entry into World War I, the community gathered in a moment of deep devotion dedicated to the Elban soldiers leaving for the front line. It remains a historical episode of great emotional impact that unites faith with the village’s shared memory and identity.

The Ritual and Atmosphere
The heart of the celebration is the evening procession, a deeply atmospheric event that begins at the parish Church of SS. Giacomo e Quirico in the town center and descends, illuminated by torches and candles, down to the Church of SS. Trinità. During historical reenactments and celebrations associated with this festival, the village rediscover its ancient sacred vestments, period costumes, artisan markets, and traditional games, offering residents and visitors a fascinating leap into the past.
