Gara dei Barroccini (Traditional Push-Cart Race)

The Gara dei Barroccini (Traditional Push-Cart Race) is one of the most original, entertaining, and lighthearted folkloric events held in the village of Rio nell’Elba. The event revives a popular tradition rooted in old-world ingenuity and play, transforming the village’s charming and steep alleys into a genuine push-cart racetrack.

History and Tradition
The barroccini (small handcrafted push-carts made of a wooden frame, four ball-bearing or rubber wheels, and a steering wheel with cable or lever controls) represent the historic pastime of the local youth. Born as a simple game from the pre-technological era, over time they have become the symbol of a community challenge that combines craftsmanship, driving skills, and plenty of community spirit.

The Event and the Race
On race day, participants compete aboard custom-built barroccini, often decorated with extravagant shapes, bright colors, and humorous themes. The course winds through the characteristic downhill streets of Rio nell’Elba’s historic center, featuring sharp turns, straight stretches, and fast sections that test the drivers amidst the enthusiasm and cheering of the spectators lined along the narrow streets.

The event is not merely a time trial or knock-out competition, but a true village festival that involves entire generations with music, awards for the fastest and most original carts, food and wine stalls, and plenty of fun.
