Il buchino

Il Buchino, the name by which Via Pagani is commonly known, is one of the most unusual and picturesque corners of Rio nell’Elba. Located in the oldest part of the village, this exceptionally narrow alley measures just 50–60 centimetres across at certain points, leaving room for only one person to pass at a time.

Its distinctive shape fits perfectly into the village’s medieval layout, characterised by closely packed houses, stairways, covered passages and narrow lanes. This structure made it possible to use all the available space while also helping to defend the settlement during the pirate and corsair raids that once affected the Island of Elba.

According to local tradition, Il Buchino began as a narrow gap between two groups of houses and was later turned into a pedestrian passageway. For centuries, the alley formed part of everyday neighbourhood life, particularly among families connected to the area’s long mining history.

Its tiny size has also inspired a humorous local saying: after eating too much, you might no longer be able to squeeze through! Today, visitors are welcomed by a playful sign, and Il Buchino has become a charming village attraction—a must-see for anyone wishing to explore one of Rio nell’Elba’s most distinctive passageways and take an unusual souvenir photograph.
