Il Canto della Befana (The Song of the Befana)

The Il Canto della Befana (The Song of the Befana)—also known as the Befanata—is one of the most authentic, ancient, and popular winter traditions in Rio nell’Elba. Carried forward with passion by the historic cultural association “La Maggiolata Riese,” this event represents a precious propitiatory ritual combining folk music, folklore, and a sense of community to welcome the start of the new year.

History and the Folk Ritual
On the eve of Epifania (Epiphany, January 5th), as night falls, the historic village transforms into an open-air stage. The singers and musicians of La Maggiolata, accompanied by accordions and dressed in traditional attire, parade through the narrow alleys and small squares of the village, chanting the verses of the historic Rio song.

Following the ancient traveling custom, the Befana, her male counterpart (the Befano), and the group of carolers knock on the doors of the village homes. In exchange for stornelli (traditional folk songs) wishing good fortune for the newly started year, they receive sweets, wine, and gifts from the residents, recreating a warm atmosphere of old-world hospitality.

The Atmosphere and the Square Celebration
The traveling route culminates in the heart of the village, in Piazza del Popolo, where the celebration continues around the bonfire with joyful moments for both adults and children. Here, the Befana distributes stockings filled with sweets to the children, while hot wine, typical desserts, and traditional drinks are offered to all participants to toast together accompanied by music.
