Ristorante La Frana is located in Rio Marina, close to the harbour and almost directly opposite the village pier. The restaurant was founded in 1982 by the father of Claudio, who now manages the business.
Before becoming a restaurant, the premises served a completely different purpose: they were originally a garage used to store a small fishing boat. The transformation of the building is closely linked to the history of the local area. After the closure of the mines, which had long been one of Rio Marina’s main sources of employment, Claudio’s father was forced into early retirement. It was at that moment that he decided to start a new venture, converting the former garage into a restaurant.
Since then, La Frana has become one of the village’s well-established dining venues. The restaurant serves both pizza and traditional dishes from Elba Island, with a particular focus on seafood cuisine. Among its signature specialities are stoccafisso (stockfish) and sburrita (salt cod soup), two classic recipes that reflect the island’s culinary heritage.
Alongside these traditional dishes, the restaurant also offers more creative preparations featuring distinctive ingredients such as colatura (fish sauce) and sea anemones, adding original flavours and contemporary touches to selected recipes.
The menu is regularly updated with new creations while continuing to preserve its most iconic traditional dishes, which remain at the heart of the restaurant’s identity and its connection to the gastronomic traditions of Elba Island.
