Portello Beach

About a kilometre north of the town centre and the port of Rio Marina, Portello beach lies along the Vigneria coast, an area of great historical and scenic interest, characterised by the presence of numerous examples of industrial mining heritage.

It is a wide beach, with around 170 metres of easily accessible shoreline, consisting of dark sand and pebbles, and over 300 metres of more rugged coastline due to the presence of large boulders. The beach is dominated by a high cliff with a distinctive reddish hue, typical of the coastline on this side, due to the high concentration of iron-rich minerals. The area is also framed by lush vegetation.

The sea is particularly clear, especially on windless days or when there is a light breeze from the north-west.

The view opens out towards the mainland, stretching from Piombino to beyond Follonica, and also taking in the islets of Palmaiola and Cerboli.

Thanks to its east-facing position, the beach is sheltered from the mistral and westerly winds.

There are no facilities on the beach.
