San Rocco Church

Located in the heart of Rio Marina’s historic center on Via Magenta, opposite the public gardens, the Church of San Rocco is one of the town’s most significant sacred buildings. Constructed in the second half of the 16th century by the Lords of Piombino, Ludovisi Boncompagni, the church was originally intended to provide a place of worship for miners who came from the mainland to work in Elba’s mines.
Initially serving as a chapel under the authority of the Church of San Giacomo and Quirico in Rio nell’Elba, San Rocco was elevated to parish status in 1840, following the growth of the population and the increasing importance of the coastal center. The church features a Latin cross layout with a single nave and a low bell tower, reflecting both its simplicity and the practical needs of the local community.
Today, the Church of San Rocco remains a spiritual and cultural landmark for Rio Marina, embodying the island’s history and the enduring connection between faith, labor, and community life.
