The Sorgente dei Canali is one of the most significant sites in Rio nell’Elba, closely linked to the history and identity of the village. It is from this spring that the stream from which the village takes its name originates, a precious resource especially during the summer months, which are traditionally marked by long periods of drought.
Over the centuries, the water has been skilfully channelled to power a series of mills in the valley below, now recognisable as striking ruins. The flour produced formed part of the wages paid to mine workers, bearing witness to the deep connection between natural resources and human activity.
Today, the waters of the spring flow into the public wash house, which has been perfectly restored and enhanced with an educational display that tells the story of the spring. Next to the wash house stands the Casa del Parco dell’Arcipelago Toscano, established in 1996, a centre for learning about and promoting the local area.
