Rio Marina

Rio Marina is one of the main towns on the Island of Elba and is situated on the island’s eastern coast, within the municipality of Rio. The town is built around the harbour and has historically been linked to mining and the trade in iron extracted from the surrounding hills. For centuries, Rio Marina was one of the most important mining centres in the Mediterranean, profoundly shaping the landscape and identity of the area.

The seafront is dominated by the Torre degli Appiani, the town’s symbol and a testament to the area’s defensive past. The typical colourful houses overlooking the harbour create a lively, maritime atmosphere. Today, Rio Marina is a renowned tourist destination, appreciated for its reddish-hued beaches and its trails linked to mining history. The harbour also serves as an important link to the mainland. Between the sea, industrial history and local traditions, Rio Marina retains a strong, authentic Elban character.
