Porticciolo Beach, located along the picturesque coastline of Rio, is a natural bay nestled amid Mediterranean scrub. Together with Luisi d’Angelo and Marina di Gennaro, it is one of three enchanting coves encountered along the Via Panoramica del Porticciolo, also known as the Sentiero dell’Amore (Path of Love). This scenic route winds through pine trees and holm oaks, connecting the centre of Rio Marina with Ortano.
The beach is easily recognisable thanks to a distinctive mushroom-shaped rock sculpted by the sea.
The shoreline stretches for approximately 100 metres and consists of sand and gravel, framed by striking rock formations. To the right, two smaller and particularly secluded coves can be reached by walking along the rocky coastline.
The name “Porticciolo” derives from the natural shelter provided by the imposing Capo Ortano promontory, which protects the bay particularly well from south-easterly Scirocco winds. Its clear waters, constantly refreshed by the currents of the channel, make it an excellent spot for snorkelling and diving. It is also a popular landing place for those exploring the coast by boat or kayak, overlooking the Piombino Channel and the islets of Cerboli and Palmaiola.
Completely free of beach establishments, Porticciolo retains a peaceful and secluded atmosphere. The holm oak woodland behind the beach provides natural shade and a cool retreat during the hottest hours of the day.
The beach is at its best when winds blow from the west and north-west, including the Maestrale, Libeccio and Ponente.

Location: Porticciolo di Rio Beach lies within the municipality of Rio, along the coastal route between Rio Marina and Ortano.
How to get there: The beach can be reached from Via Panoramica del Porticciolo via a pedestrian staircase descending through the woodland, or on foot from Ortano along the panoramic coastal trail. More specifically, from the scenic road connecting Rio Marina and Ortano, approximately 2.5 km from the centre of Rio Marina, a staircase begins near the limited roadside parking spaces. The steps lead gently through a holm oak woodland down to the beach. From Ortano, the beach can only be reached on foot or by bicycle along the coastal trail.
